Making the most of bank holidays

May is a great month for gardening, as the weather warms up and plants start to grow rapidly. And this month we get long weekends in which to really get stuck into the garden. Below are some ideas for what to work on in the coming month.

  1. Plant warm-season vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, and cucumbers. Make sure to provide them with enough sun, water, and nutrients.

  2. Deadhead flowers. Removing spent flowers from plants encourages more blooms. In May, deadhead spring-flowering bulbs like tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths.

  3. Mulch: Mulching helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around your plants to keep them healthy.

  4. Prune shrubs: May is a good time to prune shrubs that have finished blooming. Remove dead or damaged branches and to shape plants for the next growing season.

  5. Plant annuals: May is a great time to plant annuals like petunias, marigolds, and zinnias. These colourful plants will bring a brightness to your garden all summer long.

  6. Water wisely: As the weather warms up, it's important to water your plants regularly. Water deeply and less frequently to encourage deep root growth.
