Hanging baskets allow your garden to bloom across multiple levels and can be rewarding projects to create. Here are the essential steps:
Choose a basket with good drainage and sturdy construction. There are many styles to pick from, from natural to metallic, which will reflect the style of your garden. The basket should have a built-in hanger or be compatible with a hanging chain or hook.
Line the basket with a coco liner or sphagnum moss, materials which help retain moisture and provide a suitable growing medium for plants.
Add a high-quality potting mix that is lightweight, well-draining, and rich in organic matter. Leave about 1 to 2 inches of space between the top of the soil and the rim of the basket.
Select a variety of plants suitable for your specific growing conditions and desired aesthetic. Consider using whether you want trailing plants to create an impression of lush greenery or colourful flowers that will brighten the garden at eye level. Upright or taller plants go in the centre of the basket.
Dig small holes in the soil. Loosen plant roots slightly and place in the prepared holes.
Thoroughly water the basket and hang. Keep the soil moist but not water logs, remembering that hanging baskets tend to dry out faster than ground-level containers. Fertilize every few weeks.
Alternatively, you can hang an existing regular pot using a macrame plant holder (pictured). This creates a multi-level look using any already potted plants, with the variety of designs and colours of macrame holders allowing you to bring out your garden's personality.
