Handsome hedges

March is a good time to start thinking about preparing your hedges for spring and summer. Here are some tasks you should consider tackling this month:

1. Prune your hedges: March is an ideal time to prune deciduous hedges, such as beech or hornbeam, before they start to leaf out. Trim back any dead, diseased, or damaged branches, and cut back any shoots that have grown out of shape.

2. Feed your hedges: Apply a balanced fertiliser, such as one with an NPK ratio of 7-7-7, around the base of your hedges to encourage healthy growth.

3. Weed and mulch: Remove any weeds that may have grown around the base of your hedges, and add a layer of mulch to help retain moisture and suppress further weed growth. 4. Despite the recent rain, it's been a dry winter so water your hedges thoroughly to ensure they have enough moisture for the upcoming growing season.

5. Check for signs of pests and diseases, such as leaf spot or aphids. If you notice any issues, treat them with an appropriate pesticide or fungicide.

6. Remember to adjust your hedge maintenance based on your specific hedge species and growing conditions. And ask us if you have any questions!
