Dealing with nettles

Hot and wet weather mean that annoying nettles are springing up everywhere. Here are some tips on how to deal with them effectively.

  1. Mulch and weed control: applying a thick layer of mulch to your garden beds can help suppress nettle growth. This reduces the chances of their seeds germinating and reaching maturity. Regular weeding can also prevent nettles from establishing themselves.

  2. If you have a large nettle infestation and manual removal is not practical, you may consider using herbicides labelled for nettles. Follow the instructions carefully, and ask us at Olive Tree Gardens for advice to ensure appropriate and safe use.

  3. If nettles are growing in your garden or yard and you want to get rid of them, use a sturdy shovel to uproot the plants, making sure to remove as much of the root system as possible. Be sure to wear long-sleeved clothing and trousers, as well as gardening gloves.

  4. Dispose of the nettles in sealed bags or a compost bin.

  5. If you come into contact with the stinging hairs on the plants, to reduce discomfort clean the affected area with soap and water or apply a cold compress or ice pack. Dock leaves growing nearby are another handy option. Although scientists say there is no chemical in the plant proven to counteract nettle stings, the cooling sap and placebo effect can bring some relief.
