While we normally advise on trees that will be with you year round, we are always happy to help you select a Christmas tree. Varieties of conifer vary in fragrance, needle retention and appearance. Here is a run down of the properties of some popular christmas tree types:
Fraser Fir: Known for its pleasant fragrance, sturdy branches, and excellent needle retention. The branches are slightly upturned, making it suitable for hanging baubles and other decorations.
Balsam Fir: Features a strong, pleasant fragrance and dark green needles. Balsam firs have good needle retention and a classic Christmas tree shape.
Douglas Fir: Has soft, light green needles with a sweet fragrance. Douglas firs are known for their pyramid shape and versatility. These are popular for their affordability and availability.
Noble Fir: Known for its sturdy branches, elegant shape, and excellent needle retention. The needles are bluish-green, and the tree has a fresh fragrance.
Scotch Pine: Features long-lasting needles and a classic conical shape. The branches are sturdy, making it suitable for heavy decorations.
Norway Spruce: Has a traditional Christmas tree appearance with short, sharp needles that may not last as long as some other varieties. Norway spruces have a classic shape and a mild fragrance.
Colorado Blue Spruce: Known for its striking blue-gray needles and symmetrical shape. The needles are prickly, and the tree has a distinctive appearance.
White Spruce: Features short, stiff needles that are green to bluish-green. White spruces have a classic Christmas tree shape and good needle retention and are well-suited for colder climates.
Always measure your space before going to buy a tree. Run your fingers along the branches to check for needle retention and, once you bring the tree home, don't forget to provide it with plenty of water to keep it hydrated and maintain needle retention.
