Building a rain garden

Rain gardens are designed to capture and absorb rainwater, allowing it to soak into the ground instead of flowing into storm drains. They are a great way to reduce stormwater runoff and improve water quality while adding a feature to your outdoor space. Ask us at Olive Tree Gardens if you would like a rain garden in your home, or follow the steps below to create one yourself.

  1. Select an area in your garden that receives runoff from rooftops, driveways, or other impermeable surfaces. Ensure the location is at least 5 metres from the foundation of your home.

  2. Check the soil in your chosen area by testing its drainage capacity. You want it to be well-draining, as a rain garden should empty within 24 to 48 hours after a rainfall. If the soil doesn't drain well, you may need to amend it with compost or other organic matter to improve drainage.

  3. Determine the size and shape of your rain garden. The size depends on the amount of runoff it will receive and the type of soil you have. Generally, rain gardens should be around 10 square metres and a shallow basin shape, with a small lip.

  4. Select native plants that can withstand both drought and heavy rain.

  5. Create an inlet and outlet. Designate a spot for water to enter the rain garden via a small pipe from your rainwater source. You can make the water chain a decorative feature of the garden. Ideally also include an overflow pipe to prevent excessive water buildup during heavy rainfall. This outlet could be directed towards a safer drainage area.

  6. Dig according to your design and plant the garden, considering plants' height, sun exposure, and moisture requirements. Add a layer of mulch around the plants to retain moisture and prevent weeds.

  7. Maintain the rain garden. Water the plants regularly until they establish deep root systems and weed the garden regularly to keep unwanted plants from taking over.
