Avoid being outfoxed

Some people enjoy having foxes visit their gardens, while others find them problematic due to issues like digging, noise, or conflicts with pets. Here are some humane and practical tips to manage foxes in your garden:

  1. Secure rubbish bins: Foxes are attracted to food waste, so ensure your rubbish bins have secure lids and are not easily accessible. Consider using bungee cords or weights to keep the lids closed.

  2. Remove food sources: Avoid leaving pet food or birdseed outside, as they can attract foxes.

  3. Fence your garden: Installing a sturdy fence around your garden can be effective in keeping foxes out. A fence with a minimum height of 2 metres and buried at least 30cm underground can deter them from digging under it.

  4. Use repellents: There are commercial fox repellents available that use scents or sounds to deter foxes. However, their effectiveness can vary, and some may only work for a short period.

  5. Use natural deterrents: Some people have had success with natural deterrents like citrus peels, chilli powder, or vinegar sprayed around the garden, as foxes dislike these smells.

  6. Install motion-activated lights or sprinklers: Foxes are nocturnal animals, so motion-activated lights or sprinklers can startle them and make your garden less inviting.

  7. Block off potential den sites: Foxes may dig or find shelter under sheds, decks, or other structures. Block off these areas to discourage them from using them as dens.

Foxes are part of the ecosystem and can help control pest populations. If their presence doesn't cause significant issues, consider learning to coexist with them peacefully. Remember also that they are wild animals, and it's essential to respect their space and avoid direct contact. It is illegal in the UK to harm or trap foxes without appropriate permits. If you find yourself facing persistent problems with foxes, consider seeking advice from your local council or wildlife conservation organizations for further guidance and assistance.
